This assignment is a twist on the classic literacy narrative. Instead of requiring students to reflect on their history with traditional literacies, I ask them to explore the multiplicity of ways they consume and produce information. My purpose in refocusing the narrative in this way is to examine the role that they play by participating in information systems and how this role is active, in contrast to its popular depiction as passive. Although the assignment explicitly involves non-scholastic tools and technologies, it is similar to the classic literacy narrative in that I use it to build a bridge between the student's master of non-academic communication norms into a discussion of participation in academic information systems.
